Tour Highlights:

  • Discover the raw beauty and incredible variety of Iceland’s landscapes, from iconic sights along the Ring Road to the remote and wild interior.
  • Explore three of Iceland’s five major regions, including the rugged highlands — areas accessible only by 4×4 vehicles, with river crossings and off-road adventure.
  • While we’ll visit famous scenic spots like waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers, the heart of this journey lies in lesser-known, uncrowded locations that few travelers get to experience.
  • Enjoy daily short hikes through colorful rhyolite mountains, deep gorges with thunderous waterfalls, moss-covered lava fields, and geothermal wonders with steam and vivid mineral deposits.
  • Soak in natural hot springs in at least two locations — the perfect way to unwind after a full day in the field.
  • While this isn’t a strict photo tour, there will be plenty of time for photography, with flexible scheduling to make the most of good light and conditions.
  • In mid-summer, Iceland sees nearly 24 hours of daylight — we don’t plan on sunrise/sunset missions every day, but if the weather looks promising and someone’s eager, we can head out for golden-hour shoots.

Tour Type:
Sightseeing-focused with several easy to moderate hikes, up to 6 miles round trip per day.

Physical Difficulty:
Easy to Moderate. Expect 2–6 miles of hiking daily, with elevation gains of up to 1,200 feet.

Weather:
Icelandic weather is famously unpredictable — it can change every 15–30 minutes. Be prepared for a temperature range of 40°F to 70°F, with possible drops to 30°F at night.
Expect rain and wind at times — quality rain gear is essential!

Transportation:
Included in the tour price (except flights to/from Iceland and airport transfers).
We’ll travel in two or three 4×4 SUVs, essential for accessing Iceland’s rugged highlands and remote trails.

Lodging:
Accommodation is based on double occupancy (single rooms available on request).
We’ve booked all hotels according to our itinerary and requested rooms with two separate beds. However, due to Iceland’s limited hotel infrastructure, some rooms may have one large bed instead. In such cases, there will always be two sets of linens and blankets.

Meals:
Not included, except for a few hotels offering complimentary breakfast.
We’ll have access to restaurants near our lodging, and we’re happy to stop at local supermarkets for snacks, groceries, or grab-and-go meals upon request.

Itinerary

Day 1.  07/03, Friday.

Participants will arrive in Iceland, and we will meet at the airport by 10 AM. If you reach Iceland the day before, you should get a hotel next to the airport so we can pick you up from your hotel. Do not book a hotel in Reykjavik—it would be about a one-hour drive, and you would have to take a taxi (approximately 200 — 240 euros) to return to the airport.

After loading our luggage, we immediately go to one of the most remote and hard-to-reach places in Iceland’s highlands — Kerlingarfjoll. We will drive for about 4 hours, and half of this time, we will drive a rough 4×4 road.

We will then travel to the famous geothermal zone of Hveradalir. This is a small valley of red rhyolite mountains, steaming vents, and bubbling rivers. It’s a hiker’s paradise, a photographer’s dream. We will spend at least 2 — 3 hours wandering between yellowish and reddish hills and climbing on top of them.

After dinner, we can hike 25-30 minutes from our rooms to the natural hot spring, or we can enjoy the well-equipped hotel’s hot spring.

Night in the Kerlingarfjoll Lodge.

Day 2.  07/04. Saturday.

After breakfast, we’ll have one more opportunity to visit Hveradalir, one of Iceland’s most colorful and surreal geothermal areas. With the weather in Iceland constantly shifting, this second visit may reveal an entirely different mood and lighting.

Around noon, we’ll begin our drive back toward “civilization.” But the day is far from over — we’ll make several spectacular stops along the way:

  • Gullfoss Waterfall — one of Iceland’s most powerful and iconic falls, known for its sheer scale and thundering beauty.
  • A quick visit to Geysir, the namesake of all geysers, where we can stretch our legs and catch the action from nearby Strokkur.
  • A short hike (less than 1 mile round trip) to Brúarfoss, a striking blue waterfall hidden in a quiet corner of Iceland’s nature.

If time and weather allow, we’ll cap off the day with an optional 4-mile round-trip hike (easy-to-moderate, ~1100' elevation gain) to a charming natural hot spring — the perfect way to relax, unwind, and soak in the landscape in the most Icelandic way possible.

Night in Hella

Day 3.  07/05. Sunday.

Today we’re heading to Landmannalaugar, one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in all of Iceland. Tucked away in the remote highlands, this geothermal wonderland feels like another planet, with steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and mountains painted in unreal shades of red, orange, green, and yellow.

Surrounded by colorful rhyolite peaks and wild lava fields, it’s the kind of place that makes you stop in your tracks.

Here, we hike up Bláhnúkur Mountain (meaning Blue Peak). This is the most challenging 6-mile Landmannalaugar hike in the area. There’s a steep ascent with a narrow path, precipitous drops on both sides, and a river we may need to wade across. So, what is the reward of this hike? The views from any spot on this trail are simply majestic.

After this hike, we will go to the natural hot spring. As we did before, we can have a glass of wine in this hot pool!

On our way back, we’ll stop at several fantastic spots that are guaranteed to make you say “Wow!”

We’ll visit a dramatic canyon carved by a series of waterfalls, then head to a massive, thundering waterfall that’s so powerful it’s carved a deep, narrow canyon through solid rock.

To top it off, we’ll explore a rarely visited valley of waterfalls — a place that feels like a lost green world tucked into the middle of Iceland’s rugged, wild landscape. It’s one of those hidden corners that few people get to see… and one you won’t forget.

When we return to the South Coast, we will stop at one of the iconic Icelandic waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss. We will get a chance to walk behind the falls. (Remember to wear waterproof clothing.)

Day 4. 07/06. Monday

Today will be a full and exciting day packed with stops, views, and unforgettable scenery. No long hikes today, but we’ll be doing plenty of walking at a relaxed pace as we explore one highlight after another.

We’ll start at one of Iceland’s most iconic sights — the mighty Skógafoss — followed by a short walk to its hidden neighbor, Kvernufoss, a lesser-known waterfall tucked into a peaceful gorge.

Next, we’ll try our luck spotting puffins along one of the many dramatic coastal cliffs. (Hopefully, they’ll still be around — puffins typically nest from April through early August.)

On the way, we’ll pass through a surreal moss-covered lava field, stop at the beautiful Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, and visit the powerful and remote Fagrifoss waterfall — another gem far from the crowds.

The second half of the day is all about Laki, one of the most geologically significant places in Iceland. The Laki eruption of 1783 changed not only Iceland’s landscape but also affected weather patterns and agriculture around the world.

Getting to the heart of Laki is a true off-road adventure — expect rough tracks, river crossings, and remote mountain passes. Once there, we’ll hike up Mount Laki for an incredible panoramic view — this is one of the most scenic hikes in Iceland.

We’ll also take a short hike to a tranquil crater lake, where rugged lava landscapes meet peaceful water — a quiet, almost otherworldly scene perfect for photography and reflection.

Day 5. 07/07. Tuesday.

After breakfast, we’ll have another chance to visit the beautiful Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon — early morning light and fewer people often make it an even better experience the second time around.

Then it’s time to head back toward Landmannalaugar! The highlands in this part of Vatnajökull National Park are vast, wild, and endlessly beautiful — and there’s still more to explore. We’ll ford several rivers on the way and, weather permitting, hike an easy 5-mile out-and-back trail to the seldom-visited Ófærufoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s hidden gems.

Unforgettable Iceland. Pet, Senior, Landscape, portrait studio, photographer in Miami and Sou

After returning to the Ring Road (#1), we’ll continue east across southern Iceland, with unobstructed views of several glaciers along the way. Our main stop here is Svínafellsjökull Glacier, where, if the weather is favorable, there’s an optional scenic flight available. This unforgettable flight takes you over massive ice fields, braided glacier rivers, and dramatic mountain ridges — an experience that’s truly once in a lifetime. (Not included in the tour price; approx. €550–650 per person.)

Later, we’ll visit a charming historic church with a grass roof, tucked quietly into the southern landscape.

To end the day, we’ll arrive at the spectacular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, filled with floating icebergs. If conditions allow, we’ll also make a stop at Diamond Beach, where chunks of ice from the lagoon wash up on the black sand, creating a surreal and unforgettable scene — perfect for photos.

Day 6. 07/08. Wednesday.

After breakfast, we’ll head out for one of Iceland’s real hidden gems — Múlagljúfur Canyon. This 5-mile round-trip hike (with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain) takes us through a quiet, wild part of the country that most people never see.

The trail winds along cliffs covered in bright green moss, with views of waterfalls and a glacier-fed river cutting through the canyon below. It’s rugged, peaceful, and unbelievably photogenic — one of those places where you’ll want to stop every few steps just to take it all in.

After the hike, we’ve got a long drive ahead — about four hours — but we’ll break it up with a few stops at roadside waterfalls and scenic viewpoints along the way. Iceland never really gives you a “boring” stretch of road.

We’re heading to a spot on the northeast coast, home to one of the biggest puffin colonies in Iceland. These little birds aren’t shy — you can often get within just a couple of feet of them and their nests. Last year, on our 2024 tour, we even saw five or six humpback whales right from the cliff! Fingers crossed for a repeat.

Night in the Hotel next to Stuðlagil Canyon

Day 7. 07/09. Thursday.

Today we’ll explore the eastern part of Iceland, an area full of raw beauty and far fewer tourists.

In the morning, we’ll head to Stuðlagil Canyon — a spot that only recently started getting the attention it deserves. It’s tucked away in East Iceland’s highlands and features jaw-dropping basalt column formations lining the turquoise-blue river that cuts through the canyon. It’s one of those places that looks almost too perfect to be real. To reach the viewpoint, we’ll take an easy 20–25 minute walk on a flat trail.

Next, we’ll continue to another hidden gem that feels straight out of a fairy tale. This beautiful series of seven cascading waterfalls tumbles down a lush green slope — and even the road getting there is part of the adventure, with plenty of photo stops along the way.

We’ll wrap up the day with a visit to Hengifoss, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, framed by colorful layers of red clay and basalt. It’s less known than many others, but just as beautiful — and a great way to end a day of exploring the wild, quieter side of Iceland.

Day 8. 07/10. Friday.

Today is another road-trip-style day with plenty of sightseeing and short walks to break up the drive.

We’ll start the day by visiting two of the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland’s north: Dettifoss, known as the most powerful waterfall in Europe, and Selfoss, its elegant neighbor just a short walk away. Both are reached by relatively flat and easy trails, and both are absolutely worth the stop.

After that, we’ll head toward the Hverir geothermal area, a steaming, bubbling landscape full of color and texture. If the ground isn’t too muddy, we’ll stretch our legs and explore this otherworldly spot on foot.

If the group is up for it, we can make a longer stop to relax at the Mývatn Nature Baths — Iceland’s quieter, less crowded alternative to the Blue Lagoon. Entry isn’t included in the tour price and costs around $60–70 per person, but it’s a great place to soak and unwind with views over the lava fields.

Later in the day, we’ll visit the stunning Goðafoss Waterfall, another must-see spot, especially for photographers.

If time allows, we can also swing by Glaumbær Farm & Museum — a well-preserved site with classic Icelandic turf houses, offering a nice peek into the country’s rural past.

Day 9. 07/11. Saturday.

This morning, we’ll head to one of Iceland’s countless scenic fjords to visit the famous sea stack Hvítserkur — a striking rock formation that looks like a dragon drinking from the sea. If we’re lucky with timing and light, we’ll be able to capture its reflection during sunrise, a beautiful and peaceful way to start the day.

Not far from Hvítserkur, we’ll check out a nearby beach that’s often home to resting seals — always a fun bonus if they’re around.

From there, we’ll make our way into western Iceland, wrapping up the tour in style. Our final main stop is one of the most photographed places in the country: Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, with the iconic Mount Kirkjufell rising in the background — a perfect last photo opportunity.

Along the way, we’ll also visit the natural rock bridges of Gatklettur and Músagjá, plus — of course — a few more waterfalls, because… it’s Iceland.

Later in the evening, we’ll return to Keflavík Airport. We’re planning to arrive no earlier than 7–8 PM, so we strongly recommend booking your return flight for the morning of Sunday, July 12, or very late on Saturday, July 11.
